Journaling can be a beautiful beneficial practice to support you in life. Consider these 12 benefits of journaling as you embark on your own creative endeavor!
I have made it a goal to be better at journaling this year, and have been left in awe at the benefits it has brought into my life.
I wanted to know if this was just my experience or if others had felt the same. Instead of relying on a google search, I decided to ask my followers and readers what they felt were the benefits of journaling in their lives.
The comments I received were beautiful and moving, and I desperately wanted to share them with you!
I think we could all agree these benefits would be something that would enrich and enlighten our lives – all from the beautiful, creative ritual of journaling.
REASON TO JOURNAL #1: reduce stress and anxiety
Being able to get your busy mind out on paper is HUGE in helping to reduce feelings of overwhelm and anxiety. Many of my friends felt the same!
REASON TO JOURNAL #2: strengthen memory
Writing things down is a great way to be able to recall events and strengthen that memory muscle. Who could possibly imagine the wonderful improvements in cognitive memory that journaling could have over time?!
REASON TO JOURNAL #3: remember and find inspiration
Speaking for myself, if I run across a quote or feel inspired by something I read or what someone said – I will 100% forget it unless I write it down!
Even the act of writing seems to open the flood gates of inspiration!
REASON TO JOURNAL #4: sleep better
Our minds can feel so busy and restless when they hit the pillow. I enjoyed hearing from others that they loved keeping a journal and pen by their bed to write the things cluttering up their mind. This truly can help us all drift of into a peaceful slumber.
REASON TO JOURNAL #5: leave a record for future self and posterity
Where on earth would we be if those who came before us never kept journals?! It is terrifying to even think about. Leaving a record for posterity and even for your future self can add so much meaning and value to life.
REASON TO JOURNAL #6: feeling more focused and present
This is one benefit I hadn’t realized until a sweet reader mentioned it. Writing in a journal helped her empty her thoughts so when she was with others she could be more present and open minded.
REASON TO JOURNAL #7: cope during difficult times
I had someone mention they had those who had suffered from traumatic events journal and write their thoughts whenever possible. This seems to be an amazing tool for dealing with difficult times and helping us through them.
REASON TO JOURNAL #8: see improvement and growth
I love the idea of using your journal to go back and evaluate your growth. It can be so hard to see otherwise.
REASON TO JOURNAL #9: connect to God
The emails I got relating to how journaling helps us with our connection to God were my favorite! They were so powerful! I have used my journal as a sort of “prayer journal” too, and I absolutely agree that it is a wonderful way to help you feel close to the spirit and to receive personal revelation.
Perhaps when we sit still long enough and show our Father in Heaven that we are listening and will write it down – He is ready to talk!
REASON TO JOURNAL #10: increase feelings of gratitude
I also love to keep a gratitude journal. Especially on those days when you don’t know what to write, you can always focus on what you are grateful for or how you saw the hand of the Lord in your life that day. A most powerful practice I like to refer to as my “Tender Mercy” journal.
REASON TO JOURNAL #11: remembering the life and love of family and friends
What a sweet idea I heard! Using your journal to record the life of those you love and your interactions with them. It would fill your heart with joy to read later on, no doubt!
REASON TO JOURNAL #12: process your thoughts
When everything feels like a confusing mess in your head, writing it out can help you make sense of it all. It is very therapeutic!
I also like to process my day with my planner, kind of in the same way but before hand.
I hope you enjoyed reading all these benefits of journaling straight from real life people who love some good ol’ pen and paper too!
